September Is One of Our Favorite Months in Downers Grove
There is something about September in Downers Grove that feels like the best of both seasons. Summer isn't quite over, the weather is usually perfect for being outside, and the community calendar starts filling up with fall traditions.
For those of us who live and work here, these events are part of what makes Downers Grove feel like home. And for anyone considering moving to the western suburbs, September is a great time to experience the community firsthand.
Here are a few events to put on your calendar.
Downtown Downers Grove Fine Arts Festival — September 12 & 13
The annual Downtown Downers Grove Fine Arts Festival returns September 12–13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
Celebrating its 49th year in 2026, the festival brings artists into the heart of historic downtown, alongside the shops, restaurants and cafés that make the area such a popular gathering place. There's also a children's art area, making this an easy family outing.
It's also a perfect excuse to spend an afternoon downtown: browse the art, grab lunch or coffee and visit some of the locally owned businesses.
Downers Grove Oktoberfest — September 18 & 19
One of Downers Grove's signature fall traditions returns September 18–19.
The 13th Annual Downers Grove Oktoberfest is presented by the Education Foundation of Downers Grove District 58 and takes place in the Forest and Library parking lots along Burlington Avenue between Main Street and Forest Avenue.
The celebration includes live music, authentic Oktoberfest food, a Kids Zone and a traditional German festival atmosphere. The event runs Friday evening and throughout Saturday.
Beyond being a fun weekend, we love that Oktoberfest supports the local school community. It's exactly the kind of event that illustrates the strong community involvement that makes Downers Grove special.

Recycling Extravaganza — September 19
Before heading to Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 19, homeowners have another worthwhile local event to visit.
The Village of Downers Grove Recycling Extravaganza takes place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Belmont Train Station parking lot.
Residents can bring a variety of difficult-to-recycle household items, including electronics, cords and chargers, smoke alarms and household textiles. Some items require fees, so it's worth reviewing the Village's current list before loading up the car.
It's also perfect timing for homeowners who are cleaning garages, basements and storage areas before winter.

Flannel Fest — September 25
September wraps up with another local favorite. Fishel Park hosts Flannel Fest on Friday, September 25 from 5–7 p.m.
It's an easy way to officially welcome fall and enjoy one of downtown Downers Grove's community gathering spaces.
Don't Forget the Downtown Market
The Downers Grove Farmers Market continues every Saturday morning through October 17, giving residents plenty of opportunities to shop local as summer turns to fall.
